Mercedes' blue is the Austin livery that matters, with Kimi Antonelli's title in reach
Mercedes, Aston Martin, Haas and Cadillac run special liveries at the United States Grand Prix, where Kimi Antonelli could clinch the title.
Four teams have repainted for Austin, and only one of the new looks is tied to something that could happen on track. Mercedes have gone blue for the United States Grand Prix, and the team are hoping Kimi Antonelli clinches the Formula 1 world championship in it on Sunday.
Motorsport.com notes that the United States Grand Prix is one of the few races where almost every team does something to celebrate. Paint is the cheap way to get noticed on a Texas weekend. Most of it is just that.
A customisation advert with a title riding on it
Mercedes were the latest team to present a one-off livery, taking to social media on Wednesday. The design promotes MANUFAKTUR, the Mercedes-Benz cross-brand car customisation programme. Motorsport.com says it swaps the W17's usual silver for blue, with the nose showing off the new colour most clearly. Formula 1 describes it as flashes of blue added to the usual silver, black and green on the cars of Antonelli and George Russell at the Circuit of The Americas.
The team have gone further than paint. There are matching race suits for both drivers and personalised AMG GT 4 Door Coupés, with more activations planned through the weekend.
It's the least Austin of the lot. It's also the only one that will mean something on Monday. If Antonelli wraps up the championship, the blue car is the one in the pictures, and that's what gives the paint a point.
Aston Martin's thank-you card
Aston Martin's AMR26 runs a one-off design in Austin to mark five years with Cognizant. The partnership began in 2021, when Aston Martin returned to Formula 1 after taking over the former Racing Point squad, and Cognizant became the team's Global AI Services Partner earlier this year.
Executive Chairman Lawrence Stroll was open about what it's for. "It's a visible thank you to Cognizant and its people for five years of partnership, while looking ahead to an exciting next chapter together," he said.
That's honest. It's also the problem. A US weekend is for fans, not a partner's staff, and a sponsor anniversary gives nobody at the Circuit of The Americas a reason to look twice.
The American teams and the one that earns it
Formula 1's two American teams both have special liveries too. Haas are running a Godzilla theme for the second time this year, having promoted the monster film franchise at the Japanese Grand Prix in Suzuka with a different design. A one-off run twice in a season starts to look less like a one-off.
Cadillac's design is for the team's first race at the Circuit of the Americas. That's a genuine occasion, and the debut earns its livery.
A livery buys you a look before a wheel turns. For Aston Martin, the look that counts is what the AMR26 does once the lights go out. For Mercedes, the blue will be remembered if Antonelli gives it a reason to be.
